The National Sea Scout FLEET Committee is now taking applications for the 2004 SEAL (Sea Scout Advanced Leadership) training courses. SEAL is a one week, hard core leadership course conducted at sea. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the SEAL Training Award, which is a silver pin with twin dolphins.

SEAL is a leadership course, not a seamanship course. It covers preparing, goal setting, organizing, supervising, commanding, communicating, training, motivating, and other topics that will help you in functioning as a leader in your Ship and in life.

To attend a SEAL class you must be a registered Sea Scout. You must have earned the rank of Ordinary Sea Scout prior to attending SEAL training, and you much study and have a thorough, working knowledge of Chapter 4 of the Sea Scout Manual.

The following SEAL classes are scheduled for 2004:

* Chesapeake Bay, Maryland
* Houston, Texas
* San Diego, California
* Ohio River, West Virginia
* Newport Beach, California

About SEAL:
SEAL is the new Sea Scout leader junior leadership course created by the National Sea Scout Fleet Committee. The course is presented by regions on a national basis. All courses are approved by the National Fleet SEAL Coordinator. It is hoped that they will eventually be available in each region.

Sea Scouts, to be eligible, must be between the ages of 14 and 18, holding at least the rank of Ordinary Sea Scout with a full knowledge of the seamanship skills contained in Chapter 5 of the current edition of the Sea Scout Manual. They must have the recommendation of and be certified as qualified by their skipper before they will be considered for admittance to the course.

Selection is solely by application to the National SEAL Co-coordinator.  Applications and more information are available on the web.

SEAL enrollment is limited to six Sea Scouts per course.

SEAL is a full week long leadership and management training course conducted at sea. It is absolutely not a nautical skills class. Sea Scouts must be certified by the skipper as fully competent in the nautical skills required for the rank of Ordinary Sea Scout as delineated in Chapter Five of the current edition of the Sea Scout Manual.

Each Sea Scout will be expected to use and teach the management and leadership skills gleaned from the course upon returning to their respective ships. They will also be able to use their new leadership and management skills in business, church and their other activities for the rest of their lives.
